The Anatomy of Amazon’s Kindle Reader

James Kara Murat asked:

The newest baby of Amazon, Kindle Reader, is lighting up the minds of millions of people all over the world—or, at least, for those who have got hold of their newest innovation immediately.

Kindle is basically like your own library, only that you can bring it with you anywhere you go. You can even tuck it in your bag. It boasts of over 90,000r reading materials, such as books, magazines, and blogs. Any update from the latter two will be delivered right at your own reader. But what else do you need to know about Kindle?

1. It uses ink. This is practically no joke. Kindle is traditional in the sense that it tries to capture the readability and scan ability of physical newspapers. What sets the difference, though, is that the ink is converted to something electronic. Besides giving you the feeling that you’re actually reading a real paper, it also allows you to read it even under natural sunlight. There’s no need for you to suffer under the glare o computer screens.

2. It connects you. Kindle uses a new technology called Whispernet. It gives you access to the Internet without the hassle of cable wires. You don’t even have to look for any WiFi hotspot. This also allows you to surf through the Web and read any interesting material from Wikipedia. Also, you can order your books immediately. They will also be delivered to you instantly. You should learn to take advantage of this as there’s no extra cost attach to it.

3. It’s ergonomic. The design of Kindle has received a number of harsh criticisms, but for the book lover, it spells bliss. Because a reader has a tendency to change position while reading, Kindle has been designed vertical for long form reading. Also, navigation buttons, which are located at each side, means that both the right-handed and left-handed can skim through the pages of the book with relative ease and comfort.

4. It has a QWERTY keyboard. Because anybody who has his own PC or at least used a computer knows the QWERTY keyboard really well, there’s not much training you need to do when it comes to searching for and buying your favorite book, newspaper, or magazine from the Internet.

5. It lasts longer. It has one of the most long-lasting batteries, even longer than those found in cell phones and laptops. If you’re going to make use of your wireless connection, you may have to recharge your reader at least every other day. Otherwise, you can have one full week of uninterrupted reading. You also don’t have to wait that long too before the battery gets fully charged. Within two hours, you can go back to your routine, which is reading.

6. It has useful accessories. There’s no such thing as trivial accessory if you speak about Kindle. You can utilize the USB cable when you’re going to transfer files from your Kindle to your PC and vice versa. The book cover, meanwhile, offers protection to your ebook reader, making sure that it doesn’t get any scratch or dirty.

Amazon Kindle How-To Series: Great Kindle 2 Keyboard Shortcuts

February 1st, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Gadgets And Gizmos
Michael Piston asked:

The new Amazon Kindle 2’s features and navigation is easy to access with the MENU, and HOME buttons, along with the 5-way navigator. But there are keyboard shortcuts built into the Kindle that can make using your new e-book reader more enjoyable. There also are some special features only available using keyboard shortcuts. Here are some of the shortcuts you should keep in-mind when using your Kindle 2.

Refresh your display - the new Kindle’s screen is a big improvement over the Kindle 1. The new “digital ink” gives the screen a little better contrast and sharpness. It also moves from page to page more quickly. What you’ll find however is that sometimes you get a “ghosting” image on your screen. This can be annoying as you read. To refresh your screen hold down the ALT key then press the “G” key.

Use the Kindle’s built-in Spoken Word feature - you can press and hold down the ALT key then press the SYM key to turn the Spoken Word feature on or off. If you want to pause the Spoken Word feature press the ALT key and the space bar. Press the ALT key and the space bar again to resume playing Spoken Word.

Can’t wait to buy some new books for your Kindle 2? Press the ALT key and the HOME button to go immediately to the Kindle store.

If you find a key passage of a book that you want to send to someone you can take a screen shot using your Kindle. Press and hold the ALT and SHIFT (up arrow) keys and then the “G” key. The screen will flash when the screen capture is complete. Attach your Kindle 2 to your computer using the USB cable. You’ll find your screen shots there with a .gif file extension. You can copy the screen shots to your computer and attach them to e-mails or print them out.

Are you bored of reading and thinking of something else to do? Of course you could use your Kindle 2 to surf the web - or - you could play a game of Minesweeper. Press and hold down the ALT key and the SHIFT (up arrow) keys and then press the “M” key. The Minesweeper game will appear on your screen. Press the MENU button to change the game options.

If you’ve uploaded your own text files to your Kindle you may need to have the Kindle scan your documents so the new files show-up on your Home page. To do this hold-down the ALT key and then press the “Z” key.

How long have you been reading this book? To find-out press the Menu key and look at the top of your Kindle display. There you’ll see the time, the memory free on your Kindle 2, and details on your wireless network connection (right now mine says “3G”).

Need some detailed technical information on your Kindle 2? From the Home Page go to Menu > Settings and then type “411″. A screen will open showing your Settings and Device Information. Take a screen shot - hold down the “ALT” and “SHIFT” keys then press the “G” key - to save the information on the screen. Press the Home button again to close this window.

Congratulations! You’ve just learned how to get more use and enjoyment from your Kindle 2 e-book reader. To get keyboard shortcuts for your Kindle 1 visit the Guide to Kindle link at the bottom of this article.

V70 Delivers New Engines, E85 Option

January 28th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Automotive
Glady Reign asked:

The third model to use the Volvo V70 moniker was officially unveiled by Volvo at this year’s Chicago Auto Show which was held on the second of February. Unlike its previous generations, the new Volvo V70 delivers with a new five-cylinder D5 diesel engine, a four-cylinder flex-fuel option, and a new top-end six-cylinder twin-scroll turbo engine, plus an E85 option.

The second-generation D5 five-cylinder diesel option integrated to the estate produces 185 horsepower and 400 pound feet of torque across its range. The D5 features a new electronically controlled turbocharger, engine management system and more advanced multi-point injection technology. The estimated fuel consumption is 6.5 l/100km with CO2 emissions of 173 g/km. The vehicle will be available in a FlexiFuel E85 alternative. The FlexiFuel model uses a four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine that is quite capable of generating 145 units of horsepower.

The new Volvo V70 is an estate version of the second generation Volvo S80, which also incorporates significant Volvo S70 parts. The Volvo V70 shares the same metal sheet with its siblings however it uses Volvo’s new design direction that combines Scandinavian and modern styling. The latter can be reflected in its different bodystyles that include the grille and the front bumper. The dashboard and the majority of the interior of the car are basically the same, nonetheless.

“This segment has been our specialty ever since we invented it back in the 1950s,” said Fredrik Arp, Volvo Cars President and CEO. “Our competitors can count on us remaining number one in the future, too. In the all-new V70, rear passengers and luggage both ride in first class.” Arp added, “The attitude towards the modern wagon has undergone a significant change. With greater focus on design and comfort, the all-new V70 is both luxurious and practical. It’s not just for families with growing children but also for active people that demand everything of their cars. In fact, we expect that half of all V70 buyers won’t actually be families with children.”

As the estate version of Volvo S80, the Volvo V70 is not really a direct replacement for the previous model. The latest version is designed to compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5-Series estate versions while its predecessors were aimed at the class below.

The use of the Volvo V70 moniker suggests continuity with the automaker’s estate range. The estate is available in as front or all-wheel drive with manual, automatic or Geartronic, semi-automatic gearboxes. Just like its predecessors, there is an all-wheel drive only variant with raised suspension, plastic body cladding and an interior grab handle. This version was famed as the Volvo V70 XC for the older cars, but was later renamed the Volvo XC70.

Also followed from the previous generation was the use of 5 cylinder, 20 valve inline transversely mounted engines. All but the bottom range 2.4 employ turbochargers with either low or high pressure depending on the model.

According to the automaker comfort is a major consideration on the Volvo V70. The seats use the orthopedic design to offer utmost comfort and support. Dual-zone climate control, high end audio equipment with the Dolby Pro Logic and sub-woofers are available on all models.

The Volvo V70 is also equipped with driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags as standard features. Also featured on the front seats is the WHIPS whiplash prevention system. It also features the BLIS blind-spot sensor system that is designed to detect vehicles within its “blind spot.” As a Volvo vehicle, the V70 use headlamps that are designed to provide extra visibility. The vehicle got five stars in the NHTSA safety testing.

Electronic Medical Records Implementation Made Easy

January 27th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Small Business
Joe Landau asked:

Implementation of an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) application in a medical practice is widely perceived to be difficult, expensive and risky. ‘Experts’ advise careful planning, equipment selection and staff training, and warn that even then you may lose productivity for a time.

But this needn’t be the case. Implementing an EMR application can be done with the same efficiency and ease as other office applications; especially in a small practice. It doesn’t have to be expensive, and it can be undertaken with minimal risk.

Implementing EMR in Stages

An Electronic Medical Records application is fundamentally a database that you can use to manage various categories of medical information for each of your patients. Among these are medical problem lists, medications, allergies, lab results, patient histories, and your patient care notes. Most data categories are independent of one another. That is, you can enter a patient’s medication into the EMR without entering any of his lab results, and you can enter a patient’s lab results without entering his medications. In this respect, the EMR application mimics the paper chart, which is composed of independent paper records.

Thus you can begin to use an EMR application by working with a single category of data while you continue to follow your current practices for other information. This ensures that the change of habits and methods required to transition to EMR will be manageable. You can add subsequent categories at your own pace.

Labs First?

Which category should you begin with? Pick one that will bring an immediate benefit to you or your staff. In an internal medicine practice, this might be the recording of lab results. A surgeon who does a lot of dictation might find that the ability to enter reports directly into the EMR application, either by speech recognition or with templates, would be a good place to start.

If you begin with lab results, which usually come from an outside lab by fax or by transmission and printing, the best option is to have them entered into the EMR application electronically. Lab results can be sent directly to your computer, and your EMR application can read them in and place them in the correct patient’s chart.

But what happens if something goes wrong? What if the technician who is setting up the connection wins the lottery, and quits? You can easily return temporarily to the original way of handling lab results, which are still coming to you just as before, whether by printer, fax or pony express, and you can still use them. No other part of your computer operation is affected, so there is minimal risk to your practice.

When the lab connection to your EMR system is completed, lab results will be available on your computer, faster than before, and you will be able to look up all the results for a patient, both for current and prior lab results, usually viewable on the same screen. Better yet, most EMR systems will send you an alert when a result is abnormal. The results can still be printed so you can read and file them in the patient’s chart, which you will still be keeping (because going paperless is the last step in implementing an EMR application, not the first).

In summary: You bought a computer (or used one that you already had), purchased an EMR application (or downloaded one free*), installed it, and let your primary lab start downloading results. Your costs have been minimal or nil (or paid by the lab), there has been little stress on you, and you have an EMR system up and running in your office. It gives you lab results and alerts more quickly that you can examine with less time and effort. It’s a pure win.

Meds First?

Suppose you decide to begin your migration to EMR with medications records rather than labs? You could start by installing the EMR application on a computer you already have - even a laptop computer. If you don’t have a computer, it may be time to invest in one of the many new, affordable computers on the market.

You can begin by simply recording your prescriptions. On most EMR systems, this is very simple, and it can be done either by you or an assistant. The assumption is that your patients’ names are in the EMR system already - this might have been done at your registration desk, or by importing all the names from your medical practice management application. If your practice management and EMR applications are an integrated system, the patient information is already there.

The least change to your existing routine would be to continue writing prescriptions by hand, as you have been. You could use a two-part pad, so there would always be a copy. Then a clerical staff member could enter the data into the EMR system. Though this requires clerical support, the impact on clinicians would be very low. A convenient alternative would be to enter the prescriptions yourself on a laptop computer, and let the EMR application print them on a nearby printer. Finally, you can have your EMR send the prescriptions directly to the patient’s pharmacy. By doing this, you’d benefit from easier handling of requests for reissue, drug and allergy interaction checking, and accurate, rapid delivery of the prescription.

Electronic Medical Records - Minimal Change Minimal Risk

You can implement an EMR application without drastically upsetting the routine of your office, or your own work. Don’t try to begin using all the system’s features at once; begin with a single feature that will give you an immediate benefit. Implement those features that will help you improve patient care and make your life easier, and ignore the others. The computer is there to serve you, not the other way around.

The key is to minimize risk. You don’t need to spend a lot of money, and you have the ability to change your mind at any time. By implementing in stages, you can bring your medical practice into the realm of electronic medical records the easy way.

* VersaForm currently offers several electronic medical records applications which can be downloaded at no charge from the company’s website, http://www.versaform.com.
