The Anatomy of Amazon’s Kindle Reader
February 7th, 2010 No Comments Posted in Hardware
James Kara Murat asked:
The newest baby of Amazon, Kindle Reader, is lighting up the minds of millions of people all over the world—or, at least, for those who have got hold of their newest innovation immediately.
Kindle is basically like your own library, only that you can bring it with you anywhere you go. You can even tuck it in your bag. It boasts of over 90,000r reading materials, such as books, magazines, and blogs. Any update from the latter two will be delivered right at your own reader. But what else do you need to know about Kindle?
1. It uses ink. This is practically no joke. Kindle is traditional in the sense that it tries to capture the readability and scan ability of physical newspapers. What sets the difference, though, is that the ink is converted to something electronic. Besides giving you the feeling that you’re actually reading a real paper, it also allows you to read it even under natural sunlight. There’s no need for you to suffer under the glare o computer screens.
2. It connects you. Kindle uses a new technology called Whispernet. It gives you access to the Internet without the hassle of cable wires. You don’t even have to look for any WiFi hotspot. This also allows you to surf through the Web and read any interesting material from Wikipedia. Also, you can order your books immediately. They will also be delivered to you instantly. You should learn to take advantage of this as there’s no extra cost attach to it.
3. It’s ergonomic. The design of Kindle has received a number of harsh criticisms, but for the book lover, it spells bliss. Because a reader has a tendency to change position while reading, Kindle has been designed vertical for long form reading. Also, navigation buttons, which are located at each side, means that both the right-handed and left-handed can skim through the pages of the book with relative ease and comfort.
4. It has a QWERTY keyboard. Because anybody who has his own PC or at least used a computer knows the QWERTY keyboard really well, there’s not much training you need to do when it comes to searching for and buying your favorite book, newspaper, or magazine from the Internet.
5. It lasts longer. It has one of the most long-lasting batteries, even longer than those found in cell phones and laptops. If you’re going to make use of your wireless connection, you may have to recharge your reader at least every other day. Otherwise, you can have one full week of uninterrupted reading. You also don’t have to wait that long too before the battery gets fully charged. Within two hours, you can go back to your routine, which is reading.
6. It has useful accessories. There’s no such thing as trivial accessory if you speak about Kindle. You can utilize the USB cable when you’re going to transfer files from your Kindle to your PC and vice versa. The book cover, meanwhile, offers protection to your ebook reader, making sure that it doesn’t get any scratch or dirty.

The Names Say it All: Best Buy and Newegg for Electronics

Joe Deacon asked:
When you think electronics, you may automatically think of Best Buy. But you should check out NewEgg - the new kid in town when it comes to getting a vast array of electronic equipment at a competitive price.
Best Buy is a super store that specializes in all things electronic and has pretty much run unfettered when it comes to competition. NewEgg is an up and coming electronics store that operates online and off line and is determined to give Best Buy a run for its money.
Racking up the Discounts
Many people today are buying electronics, DVDs, music and even televisions online, where they can get the best deals for their money. Most of the large retailers, such as Best Buy, have online stores as well. These online stores offer discounts for those who deem to make their purchases over the internet. You can find coupons for Best Buy and New Egg electronics by looking online. Often, if you make a purchase from one of these stores, you will receive discounts by way of coupons in your email. Check your email, including your spam folder, when it comes to getting discounts on electronics.
Spoilt for Choice at Best Buy
Best Buy offers a wide selection of electronic equipment and the off line stores have just about anything that plugs into a wall. These include electronic items such as computers, cell phones, cameras and camcorders as well as television sets and even home appliances. No matter what you want that is electronic, you can get it at Best Buy, either online or off line, usually at a competitive price.
Delightful Discounts at Newegg
Newegg is a relatively new store that offers electronics for less. Anyone who is purchasing electronics should take a look at the prices in this electronics store. You can often find the same electronic equipment that you would buy at Best Buy for less when you visit Newegg. However, you will not find the same vast amount of selection at NewEgg as you will when you visit Best Buy.
When it comes to payment methods, Best Buy has their own store credit card that can be used to make purchases in their store, both online and off line. NewEgg does not have a store credit card, but does accept credit card payments. As many people pay with Visa or Mastercard for their purchases, that are either debit or credit cards, you have credit card convenience when it comes to payments for both stores.
Cashing in on Coupons
If you want to save money on electronic equipment, one of the best way s to do so is to seek out coupons. The internet gives you many options when it comes to finding coupon codes that can be used for stores, especially when it comes to buying electronics. As of now, you have a better chance of getting coupons for NewEgg electronics than you do for Best Buy, especially if you are a steady customer of this electronics store.
Both Best Buy and NewEgg have something to offer customers when it comes to electronics. They not only feature state of the art electronics of all kinds, but they also offer them at a competitive price. To save even more money at these electronics stores, look for online coupons.

The Hanvon eBook Reader is an Electric Paper Display based device that provides pleasant reading experience to the customers. Touch screen, Handwriting input, and Wi-Fi connections are core strengths of Hanvon eBook Reader. Comparing to the Amazon Kindle and Sony Prs-700, the Hanvon E-reader is only 5.9oz weight, 11mm thick, super power save, and huge memory capacity. These valued features are providing an excellent convenience to the travel, meeting, and corporation trainings.
Samsung had an early version of its Papyrus e-book reader on hand at CES, but it looks like a spruced up version of the device is now making the rounds in Europe, and the company has taken advantage of the opportunity to dish out a few new details.
Now let’s think about this issue, will this new electronic tech bring a revolution of culture aspect? without doubt, it will improve the rapid of culture spreading, and make people getting knowledge more easier. On the other hand, it also makes the bad culture spreading to all over the world easily. Maybe some day the publishing company will be closed, or they have to change their business.

If you have just heard about the entire latest buzz surrounding the e-book reader Kindle from Amazon, you need to know more. Here are the top 10 aspects about Kindle almost everyone needs to know!
i. MP3 playing
The Kindle device from Amazon has the amazing ability to play all the MP3 songs which you would have downloaded into the internal storage mechanism. Capacities of the internal storage are around 180 MB in space. You could also store these MP3 songs in the allocated SD card slot. You can play the songs in random shuffle and choose to listen to songs in the background while you read the e-book!
ii. DRM support
The Kindle comes with DRM support by means of support for file types of extensions .AZW. It also is compatible with Mobipocket books of the unprotected varieties. Therefore file types like .MOBI, .TXT, .PRC, Word as well as .HTML are all supported by the Kindle. You can transfer files via USB or via email. No more need to print!
iii. Kindle Now Now
This is a new feature introduced by Kindle which enables a powerful search mechanism. By means of a query mechanism you can search for almost anything you wish for absolutely free of cost! This search facility is powered with the help of Mechanical Turn from Amazon which is a distributed system of work.
iv. Blog subscription
You can avail blog subscriptions by paying a meager 2 dollars every month! Besides this, you also get access to a 14 day trial period. For no additional cost, you get to browse the blogs directly via the ‘Basic Web’ which is a browser provided for free. You only pay for access to the RSS feeds but not for surfing the web.
v. Font types supported
Kindle primarily supports two kinds of fonts namely the Neue Helvetica and the Caecilia. These are provided by Linotype. Book texts are all provided in the default Caecilia font. However, other than reading, you can select from 6 font types.
vi. Ergonomics
While the Kindle may not have great aesthetics what with a no-so-great looking color, the shape of the device is very ergonomically designed.
vii. No scroll keys
If you wish to navigate to the next page or further below, there are no scroll down keys provided in the Kindle. To move across content or even scrolling on the web pages you will need to use the page forward keys and the back button for this.
viii. Audible e-books
You can use the Kindle from Amazon to play out audible e-books. However the ‘whispernet’ service provided by means of the EVDO internet connection does not support downloads of such audible e-books on air. You will need to leverage the Audible Manager for downloading and subsequently copy the file to Kindle via USB port on the PC. This eliminates the need for printing altogether.
ix. Text file download
Kindle allows you to easily download text files for future use. All it takes is just 45 seconds to download even massive text files!
x. Files not supported
The Kindle does not ensure compatibility with Mobipocket files which have been DRMed. Also the Kindle will not support PDF file types – not even after you convert the file!

Kindle Vs. Sony Ebook Reader Reviews
October 18th, 2009 No Comments Posted in Hardware
James Kara Murat asked:
There has been a lot of buzz lately about the brand new e-book reader launched by Amazon. The most popular e-book reader around has been the one launched by Sony.
The price difference
One of the main differences that really stands out between the Sony E-book Reader and Kindle is the vast price disparity. There’s a whopping 100 dollar difference with the Sony reader being priced at 300 USD and Kindle having a price of 400 USD. While the Sony reader promises a host of freebie features like free viewing of PDF files, no internet connection needed, free access to blogs as well as RSS feeds and even a memory card included in the welcome kit, this reader from Sony sure has plenty of upsides to it. However, Kindle isn’t far behind what with the capacity to contain more than 200 titles and an SD card slot that is included with it. However, you do need to pay 1 dollar for every blog and RSS feed respectively which is quite a bit expensive.
The format
While the Sony Reader allows you to view PDF files free of cost, the Kindle charges a 10 cent fee for every PDF file that you would sync into the device. Also Kindle tends to read HTML, plain text formats and images from the SD card but doesn’t do too well with DOC, RTF and PDF formats. But then again even the Sony Reader cannot read DOC formats directly.
E-ink technology
As far as the 6 inch LCD screen display goes in the Kindle, the display uses the revolutionary e-ink technology using ‘Vizplex’ film on the surface. However, both the Sony Reader and the Kindle have used the same technology. The plus side to this technology is that 40% of received light gets deflected and uses reflected instead of transmitted light which makes both devices easy on the eyes.
Printability
There is no need to print any document because Kindle offers portability in taking along all personal documents at anytime in any place, thereby eliminating the need for printing. The 10 cent fee is applicable for wireless transfer of word documents. However, if users do not wish to shell out this fee, free transfers can be leveraged. For this, the file or attachment needs to be sent to ‘name’@free.kindle.com where name stands for the ID used for your Kindle email address. So if the Kindle email ID is smith@kindle.com then attachments need to be sent to smith@free.kindle.com and then the file gets converted and emailed to the associated Amazon account.
Battery life
The Amazon Kindle is by far a better choice when it comes to battery life. You can go for four days at a stretch without any need to charge the Kindle. Besides, this is its good network coverage in almost any area which makes for good portability. Turning pages is as easy at the click of a button which means that even if you are reading the e-book in bed, operating the Kindle is much easier than the Sony Reader.

How to Use your Kindle?

The amazing new e-book reader launched by Amazon, called Kindle is the talk of the town these days. About as small as a paperback book, this device is capable of reading all types of files right from Word docs to HTML to text files as well as .MOBI. Here are a couple of things you need to be aware of while using the Kindle.
Word doc transfers frugally
If you wish to transfer a Word document using Kindle you will need to shell out 10 cents for every file sent. So for all of you who are frugal minded there is a free alternative indeed. For obtaining free transfers of files you just need to send the attachment to ‘name’@free.kindle.com where name stands for the ID used for your Kindle email address. E-ink Technology - All you Need to Know

James Kara Murat asked:
When it comes to ensuring superior reading experience under a wide range of lighting conditions nothing beats e-ink technology. Introduced by the E-ink Corporation this technology is today commonly used on most electronic paper display devices.
What is an EPD?
EPDs or electronic paper displays are displays which have the distinct characteristics of high contrast paper, use very little power and have a thin and light appearance. It is very easy on the eye and gives the reader an impression like you are reading from paper. The main advantage is that unlike paper which doesn’t update the content, an EPD can!
A little about e-ink Corporation
E-ink Corporation is a privately held organization that is the largest manufacturer of EPDs. Started in the year 1997 by Mr. Joseph Jacobson, today e-ink technology is a revolution in itself. The E-ink Corporation has significant partnerships with many top companies such as Amazon, Sony and Motorola.
Where can this technology be useful?
E-ink is such a novel technology that it can be used in areas which haven’t been tapped into yet. For transportation signage this technology can be very useful, especially since factors like sunlight and viewing angle can hamper vision. For e-books this e-ink technology is being used these days as conventional e-books can strain the eyes. Even commonly used on cell phone displays this revolutionary technology is also being used by product designers to unleash their imagination!
Future goals
The E-ink Corporation has further plans to diversify the use of this technology. It aims at creating RadioPaper which will be a lightweight display that will also enable easy download of news content or even novels at the touch of a button. It will also have the same readability as ink present on paper but will have the added advantage of updated content. The ultimate goal of E-ink Corporation is to transform even convention surfaces to make them into display areas which use this e-ink technology.
Catalogs which are never dated
Imagine a world where you had billboards with dynamic content, catalogs which never needed replacement or updating or even newspapers which never became dated? Well, this isn’t out of a science fiction novel. It is a very real possibility with e-ink technology.
About the technology
Here’s a little something for those of you who absolutely dig technology. The concept behind e-ink is to use black and white present by the millions contained within microcapsules. These microcapsules are then electronically charged after which the particles sink or float. The ink can be used to coat any surface, even on potentially large areas. The content used will always get updated on a continual basis – thereby facilitating dynamic content with e-ink. Since the technology provides tremendous ease of reading there is no more need to actually print out information as you can read perfectly on the device itself. It’s in fact as good as reading a piece of paper! The e-ink technology can work on a myriad of surfaces and textures from metal, plastic to paper.

Portable Kindle 2 Electronic Learning

Ben Dave asked:
First, Amazon pioneered online bookstores so people can purchase books without visiting the bookstores. Then, they redefined reading by enabling people to read books without the books through the Kindle 2 ebook reader. And if those privileged with the initial Kindle are still gaga over it, wait till they catch sight and Buy Kindle 2. In a nutshell, the Kindle 2 is the original Kindle with a big step further into the future of reading. With the supply chain of books becoming increasingly e-based, paper-filled books were always going to turn into e books. Now that we have just the perfect all-in-one device to procure, read and bring with you all the books you want anywhere you go and anytime you want, that’s hard to resist. Oprah loves her electronic book reader, so too will many of us love ours. There are quite a few brands of electronic book readers in the market but only a handful of them are generally considered to be up to mark. The two heavyweights are the Amazon Kindle and Sony PRS and they split bragging rights over various factors albeit not exactly in neck and neck fashion. If independent review sites are anything to go by, the Kindle has an emphatic overall edge and is powering away with its second edition - Kindle 2. The Kindle 2 eBook Reader is in great demand. Availability of stock at Amazon is at best intermittent. Waiting time fluctuates and they are not accepting overseas orders although some 3rd-party distributers and retailers do ship abroad with due shipping charges and mark-up. They are also sporadically spotted on eBay and when they are, are surely to be accompanied by price premium. Analysts estimate that the original Kindle sold in excess of half a million units. Going by the current rate, the Kindle 2 is poised to sell lots more. That means it’s not only good for readers, it’s great for the environment. Electronic book readers can substitute the need for books so the Kindle 2 can save quite a few trees from being turned into paper for them. Yes, the Kindle 2 is green. Kindle eBook Reader save money too. Savvy readers would realize that Amazon subsidizes its Kindle book sales and provides free sampling of e-books so you are never mistaken about to Buy Kindle 2. That may be string attached to sell its electronic book reader but the bottom line makes sense at the end of the day. Even for occasional readers, this should be a no-brainer. That’s on top of all the other good stuff it brings.
